Saturday Open Mat in Jacó: What Visitors Should Know Before They Roll
Saturday Open Mat at Jaco Jiu Jitsu starts at 12:00 p.m. at our rooftop dojo at Room2Board in Jacó, Costa Rica.
Students from other academies are welcome. Local grapplers, visitors, and travelers passing through Jacó can use the session to get rounds, drill, and meet people from Costa Rica’s growing Jiu Jitsu community.
Always check the current Jaco Jiu Jitsu schedule and message the academy on WhatsApp before you roll through to confirm the sesh and whether that week’s Open Mat will be Gi, No-Gi or mixed.
What Is an Open Mat?
An open mat is a less structured training session without the normal class format of warm-up, technique instruction and assigned drilling.
People generally use the time for:
Live rounds
Positional sparring
Drilling
Reviewing techniques
Working on specific problems
Meeting training partners from other academies
Open mat does not mean there are no standards. The normal rules of hygiene, safety, respect and communication still apply. You are entering someone else’s academy and working with people who are trusting you with their bodies.
Train hard. Train smart. Take care of your partners.
Where Is Saturday Open Mat in Jacó?
Jaco Jiu Jitsu trains at our open-air rooftop Dojo at Room2Board, just steps from Jacó Beach.
The academy address is:
Room2Board
10 meters south of Bahía Azul
Jacó, Puntarenas 61101, Costa Rica
The rooftop setting gives the mat space ocean air and views of Jacó. It is one of the things that makes training here memorable, but it also means you should arrive hydrated and prepared for warm, humid conditions.
You do not need to stay at Room2Board or purchase a Jaco Fight House package to attend Open Mat. Jaco Jiu Jitsu is the year-round academy. Visitors can contact the school directly and attend an appropriate session.
What Time Is Open Mat?
Saturday Open Mat is at 12:00 p.m.
Schedules can change for holidays or events. Check the live schedule to confirm.
It’s always a good idea to get there a little early to find the rooftop, change, and introduce yourself to the crew.
Who Can Attend?
Jaco Jiu Jitsu welcomes EVERYONE.
Tell people your experience level, communicate the pace you want, and disclose any injury that affects the round. If you are a complete beginner, message the academy before arriving. Open mat is less structured than a normal class. You may get more value from a coached beginner-friendly session or a private lesson before entering an open sparring environment.
Remember: You don’t need to prove anything because you’re visiting from another academy.
Good visitors make the room better.
Is Open Mat Gi or No-Gi?
Confirm the format before coming. Some open mats are Gi, some are No-Gi and some include both depending on who attends. The safest approach is to check with the academy and bring the correct clean equipment.
If you are deciding which style works best for your trip, read the Gi or No-Gi in Jacó guide. Don’t assume that loaner gear will be available. Call ahead. Ask.
What Should You Bring?
For Saturday Open Mat, bring:
Clean gear
Your belt if training Gi
Sandals or slides for walking off the mats
Water
A towel
A clean change of clothes
A separate bag for wet or used gear
Any personal protective equipment you normally use
No-Gi shorts should not have exposed zippers, metal or hard pockets. Remove jewelry and trim your nails before training.

Open Mat Etiquette for Visitors
Introduce Yourself
Tell the instructor or senior person in the room who you are, where you train and your experience level. You don’t need to recite your entire competition history. A simple introduction gives people the information they need to train with you safely.
Ask Before You Roll
Do not assume someone is available because they are standing near the mat. Ask them to train. If they decline, move on without taking it personally.
Agree on the Pace
“Want to go light?” can mean different things to different people.
Communicate clearly. If you want technical movement, say so. If you want a hard competitive round, find a partner who wants the same thing.
Respect the Tap
Release immediately when someone taps. Do not crank submissions or continue through a tap.
Match Experience and Size Intelligently
Large differences in size, age and experience require judgment. The more experienced grappler should be able to control the pace instead of using the mismatch to dominate.
Keep the Mats Clean
Wear sandals whenever you leave the mat area. Do not walk into bathrooms barefoot and then return to the training surface.
Do not train in dirty gear.
Leave the Ego at the Door
Open mat is not an unsanctioned tournament. You are not defending your academy’s honor. Your partner is not an opponent. One round does not establish who has the better lineage, team or life.
Roll. Learn. Help everyone leave healthy enough to train again.
How Hard Should You Train in Jacó?
Jacó is hot and humid. Many visitors are also surfing, hiking, riding ATVs, changing diets, sleeping differently and spending more time in the sun.
Account for the total stress of the trip.
Drink water before class. Start the first round at a manageable pace. Pay attention to how your body responds to the climate. Taking a round off is smarter than turning a Saturday session into the end of your vacation.
Training hard is part of Jiu Jitsu.
Knowing when to slow the pace is also part of Jiu Jitsu.
What If You Want More Than Open Mat?
Open Mat is ideal for rounds and less formal training. If you want regular instruction, review the weekday Gi and No-Gi sessions on the class schedule.
If you are visiting for a single class or several days, the BJJ Drop-Ins in Jacó guide explains the current visitor basics.
Private coaching is available by appointment with Professor J.P. Donahue, a third-degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt and four-time Pan American Champion.
Jaco Jiu Jitsu teaches fundamentals, positional dominance, pressure, control and real techniques that work against resistance. The goal is not to collect rounds. It is to level up your Jiu Jitsu.
