You do not need to purchase lodging, a retreat or a Jaco Fight House package to attend a regular class.

Check the live schedule and contact the academy before arriving so you know which session best fits your experience and the gear you have with you.

Jaco Jiu Jitsu runs weekday training plus Saturday Open Mat, with private coaching also available by appointment.

Where is Jaco Jiu Jitsu?

The academy is on the rooftop at Room2Board in Jacó, Costa Rica, near Jacó Beach.

If you are already in Jacó, the simplest approach is to check the schedule, send a message, arrive a little early and introduce yourself before class.

What should I bring?

For Gi class:

  • Clean Gi

  • Belt if you already train

  • Water

  • Sandals or footwear for off-mat areas

For No-Gi:

  • Clean rash guard or fitted athletic shirt

  • Grappling shorts or compression shorts without exposed zippers or hard pockets

  • Water

  • Sandals or footwear for off-mat areas

Trim your nails and arrive in clean training gear.

If you are traveling without the equipment required for the class you want, contact the academy before arriving.

Do I need to reserve in advance?

Sending a message before class is the best approach.

It lets the academy confirm the current session, help you choose the appropriate class and answer any gear or arrival questions.

It is especially useful if you are a complete beginner, if you are traveling without a Gi or if you want private coaching.

Can complete beginners drop in?

Yes, beginners are welcome at Jaco Jiu Jitsu.

If you have never trained before, say that when you contact the academy. A coached class is usually a better first experience than Open Mat because the structure and instruction are clearer.

You do not need to get in shape before starting.

Can experienced grapplers drop in?

Yes.

Visitors from other academies and affiliations are welcome. When you message, share your belt level and academy so the coach knows your experience.

The goal is simple: come in, train hard, be a good partner and leave the room better than you found it.

Is there an Open Mat in Jacó?

Jaco Jiu Jitsu currently holds Saturday Open Mat at 12:00 PM.

Open Mat is a good option for experienced visitors looking for rounds or positional work. Complete beginners will usually get more from a coached class first.

Because schedules can change, confirm the live schedule before traveling to the academy.

Are private lessons available?

Yes. Private coaching is available by appointment with Professor J.P. Donahue, a third-degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt and four-time Pan American Champion.

Private lessons are useful when you want focused technical work or when the regular class schedule does not fit your trip.

Do I need Jaco Fight House to train?

No.

Jaco Jiu Jitsu is the year-round academy. Jaco Fight House is an optional travel and stay-and-train experience.

If you only want to attend a class, you can simply arrange a drop-in directly with Jaco Jiu Jitsu.

Planning a longer Jiu Jitsu vacation?
